Health and Safety

In any community, health and safety of it's residents is a fundamental concern. The Mayo Peninsula is no different. With a dramatic increase in residential development, the Mayo residents are becoming increasingly concerned about their septic systems, water supply and traffic. The following are common the concerns of the majority of residents.

  • Emergency response times are longer than the recommended national average.

  • Concern for adequacy and quality of groundwater supplies. Wells are failing and contaminants such as arsenic have been identified in select areas.

  • Roadways lack shoulder/safe areas for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Frequent road flooding and no plans to deal with sea level rise.

  • Some homes on the Peninsula experience back-flows of sewage into their basements during heavy rains.
